King COB (Chip On Board) LED Grow Light Review

The COB in its name is an acronym which stands for "chip on board". COB LED’s have chips that run directly off of a circuit board. Because modular LED’s tend to run off of ballasts and DIP lights are all wired indirectly into their light, there’s a bit of disconnect between light and light source. COB LED’s however, are pretty much a circuit board, diodes, and a modular fan for cooling. Traditional LED’s have diodes that project their given spectrum. Now on a COB, this wayfarer holds a cluster of diodes, working together to produce a well-rounded spectrum. Because they are all clustered together, and in a sense operating as a single unit, this is going to boost your efficiency. This unit will consume less energy than a traditional LED while giving off a fuller blended spectrum. Consuming less energy also means producing less heat, but we will get to the power consumption and heat later, for now, let's focus on the spectrum. The 3000K wavelength this grow light emits sits close enough to the warm spectrum to get your plants flowering when they’re ready. At the same time, there’s still enough of the cool spectrum to give your plant plenty of growth during its vegging stage. There’s no swapping out HPS or MH bulbs like with HID’s, and there are no gaps in coverage like those in multi-wavelength LED’s. With this light, you’ll be getting every bit of light other grow lights get and then some. The odd design of the King Cob may be one of its best qualities. The spread out bars of LED’s allows you to customize your area of reach. If you have a tight-knit grow you can move these lights closer together making a more focused position of light. On the other hand, If you have a large grow area you can spread them out optimizing the number of plants this light reaches. Another benefit of the design is that because these LED’s are spread out, the heat these lights produce will more easily be cooled vs building up on top of one another. Unlike other LED’s (like modular LED’s) that operate multiple fans to help cool internal ballasts, this light has heat syncs all over to help dissipate heat. Instead of running lots of little ballasts and fans, this light runs off of a single ballast with deep heat syncs to help alleviate any concentrated heat. At the same time, each light bar also includes heat syncs for maximum heat dissipation. That means that this light will keep itself cool while maximizing every watt of energy it draws. The King Cob comes in two sizes. There is the 360 W 6 Bar and the 480 W 8 Bar. Each light breaks down into the bars. 1 Bar consumes about 60 watts. Both the 6 and 8 bar lights are in the 3000K spectrum range. Now I'm sure you guys are curious how intense this light really is, so we ran a PAR and heat test for you guys. These are the results... As you can see the Chip On Board tech takes LED tech even further for indoor growers. These lights hold to the well-known reputation of LED grow lights while further driving the goal of low heat, high efficiency.
