Ceramic Metal Halide grow lights are growing in popularity among indoor growers- particularly marijuana and medical cannabis growers- for two reasons: their even light spectrum that’s good for flowering and vegging, and their ability to pump out major light energy with relatively low energy consumption. With so many options out there, though, it can be nearly impossible to decide on one. So how are you supposed to know which CMH grow light is best for you?
That’s where GrowAce.com comes in. Our team of growers and botany experts have tested tons of CMH grow light kits out there and found that not all of them are the same. In fact, despite having many popular models and brands on the market, there are plenty of lights that are suited for all skill levels and budgets.
After all, was said and done, we compared our findings to growers who used the same lights, and we assembled this list of the Top 4 Ceramic Metal Halide Grow Lights of 2018 just for you:
Kicking things off is the powerful Yield Lab Professional Series 120/220v 630w Dual Bulb CMH Open Wing Complete Grow Light Kit. This CMH grow light kit offers dual Yield Lab 315w 3100K CMH bulbs to give your plants a strong light to grow under with a balanced spectrum of blue and red wavelengths to mimic the high noon sun. In fact, these bulbs are so balanced they even offer your plants an extra UVB spectrum most other MH bulbs leave out.
The open wing design of the reflector also helps dissipate heat toward the top of the light instead of down toward the canopy of your plants. As well, its dimmable ballast allows you to decide whether you want 50%, 75%, or 100% of this CMH’s light, so if you’re looking for a powerful light that can still keep things relatively cool, the Yield Lab Professional Series 120/220v 630w Dual Bulb CMH Open Wing Complete Grow Light Kit is the kit you’re looking for.

Since we were introduced to the Yield Lab Professional Series 120/220v 315w All-In-One Hood CMH Complete Grow Light Kit we couldn’t believe how great of a CMH grow light it actually was. That intensity the CMH bulb shine brighter, giving your plants a constant stream of strong 3100k light with a hint of UVB in the mix for resin production.
Its compact, all-in-one design give you the reflection of a hood reflector with the vertical light of an umbrella, which actually helps your plants receive more light out of the bulb than most horizontal bulbs. Perfect for at-home growers with 2-3 plants, the Yield Lab Professional Series 120/220v 315w All-In-One Hood CMH Complete Grow Light Kit will give you yield after yield of quality harvests.

The simplicity of the Phantom CMH Reflector, Ballast, and Lamp Kit (4200k) is what makes us love this grow light kit. Its Philips double-jacketed Master Color 942 CDM Elite MW 315W T12 ceramic metal halide bulb offers a 4200k light spectrum which gives your vegging stage a little more *umph* without affecting its flowering capabilities.
If you put other ballasts next to your WiFi router, you’ve got no internet- not with this ballast. The ballast on this CMH grow light runs on at a much lower frequency compared to other ballasts on the market. With air vents on either side of its reflector for better cooling than other CMH’s around, the Phantom CMH Reflector, Ballast, and Lamp Kit (4200k) is the perfect light for any at-home grower raising plants in tight quarters.

#4 Yield Lab Professional Series 120/220v 630w Dual Bulb CMH Complete Grow Light Kit
Our experience using the Yield Lab Professional Series 120/220v 630w Dual Bulb CMH Complete Grow Light Kit for growing was a great one. Not only is it powered by an adjustable digital dimming ballast, two Yield Lab 315w 3100K CMH bulbs offer twin 3100k spectrums for plants. While temperatures at the canopy level were a couple of degrees higher than we’d like, all we did was raise the light a couple of inches and our problem was solved. That just goes to show how intense the wavelengths of light are coming from this grow light.
Aside from its awesome performance, we were surprised about how compact this was. Even with the ballast attached to its reflector, this 630w CMH unit was around 2-3” shorter than the HPS/MH grow lights we’ve worked with- definitely a plus for growers that need lots of light in a compact area.
